What to do? Need advice

I seek everyone's advice.

Im in a situation where I am working on a project and I have a partner in that project. We both share the vision of the goal, and we are both unsure how exactly we are going to do it.

However, my team partner doesn't want to stick to the rules. He always finds ways to break them and workaround them. Although I am very sure that he understands why the rules are there, and understands that we can only get to what we need if we stick to the rules.

I've talked a lot to my friend here to make sure we do stick to the rules. Every time I do this he agrees and we go back to sticking strictly to the rules. But only for a few weeks, at best.

I think he does this because the rules are difficult and its easier to break the rules. And to that we have a huge project to accomplish, one that requires dedication and work. Why would the rules be easy? It only makes sense that they would be difficult.

It seems my friend needs to decide. Either stick with the project and its rules, or find another project with easier rules.

  1. What kind of rules is it?

  2. I cant go into any details, but they are the kind of rules that need not be broken.

  3. I guess it's about time you made your partner know that you will not tolerate more violations of the rules and that how that will have dire consequences on your relationship.
Explain to him your vision and why you want to stick to these rules, explain how you find winning using these violations not very attractive.
Finally, try to micromanage these aspects of the relationship. Convince him to discuss such things with you and go ahead with them only if both of you agree to them. This will give you a chance to mitigate this issue.
As a last resort you can switch roles, making sure that the new role he's in doesn't have room for breaking rules

    Good luck

  4. I say macro manage him and focus on the outcome, if you are worry about liability , then you are with the wrong partner.

  5. Are you with the wrong partner?

  6. Thank you all for your advice.

I would to say to Anonymous (Who I suspect may be my partner) that I have no intention of changing my partner, but I need to make it clear that this is soo important that the choices are either stick with the rules or find another project. So clearly, if finding another project is not an option (as is the case with both of us now in this market) then the only thing to do is to stick to the rules.

  7. Thanks :)

    only the last Anonymous.
